Bellows Falls Depot Bridge Project & Blog
The Depot Street Bridge, built in 1909,
started to show signs of spalling concrete and exposed rebar in the 2010's.
There is exposed reinforcing and heavy section loss along the water line at the arch foundation, and the extent of deterioration is unknown as the base of the arch is submerged below the canal water line.
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans) evaluated alternatives for rehabilitation or replacement of the Depot Street Bridge in an engineering study completed in 2018.
The Town and Village voted to replace the structure with an off-alignment vehicular bridge improving commercial access to the Island.
In addition to the off-alignment vehicular bridge there will be a pedestrian bridge constructed which will also be used to carry municipal utilities such as sewer and water.
The final project involves the demolition of the existing bridge.
We invite you to take a step back in time to learn about the history of Bellows Falls, its bridges, and the people who played a large part in the industrialization of what is known as the Island.
