What is 'wayfinding'? It is a system of design elements, including signs and maps to help guide people from where they are to where they want to go.
The Town of Rockingham and it's Villages: Saxtons River and Bellows Falls, with the historic Rockingham Village; and hamlets: Brockway Mills, Cambridgeport, Bartonsville, are all rich in history. Our recreational and archeological assets are almost hidden away, even to local residents.
Organizations and the Town itself have been talking about wayfinding signs, informational kiosks and maps for years! In 2023, Development staff and members of the Bellows Falls Downtown Development Alliance (BFDDA) began discussions to identify the assets we have and those we want folks to find easily.
'Walkable Rockingham' was agreed upon, and with efforts by the Chamber and Bellows Falls Downtown, interest in highlighting what makes our Town special to those who discover us became very important. From the Carnegie (one of 4 in the State) Rockingham Free Public Library, to the self-guided Victorian neighborhood and Historic Square walking tour, the trails on Oak Hill, the Bellows Falls Historical Society Museum and Adam's Grist Mill Museum, the Rockingham Meeting House, Herrick's Cove, the fish ladder, we must make them accessible and share the history of this place we call home to our visitors and residents has become very important.
In 2024, Rockingham staff and municipal officials solicited bids from consultants to build a new website, 5 were received.
The Town hired Munibit, based in St. Charles, Missouri.
Rockingham sent an RFQ in February 2025 for design consultants and received 6 bids for wayfinding and design documents from consultants from Randolph, VT to Texas. After a committee and interview process, the Town hired fd2s based in Austin, TX.
